    Hiraga A5s

ALTEC HIRAGA VOICE OF THE THEATER Speaker 1505B 288C - eBay (item 200481708977 end time Jul-09-10 15:27:37 PDT)

I'm not sure that almost 7 grand is good value here....

Maybe 5000 for the components, if they reach the prices we've all seen lately, driven by the 1505s and throats.

At that price they could be more decor friendly. However, Altec fans may not care if they can have something higher-end.

I'm no expert, but i'm not seeing the value here, maybe if the 1505's were earlier and tar filled.

He could have at least validated the 515B's with a couple pics and a sweep performed by one of those world renowned experts he namedropped to ensure they still play within spec.

    Re: Hiraga A5s

Based on my records of Altec eBay prices, this is what I come up with.

These are examples of sales from the last year. Prices(first set of numbers) are in US dollars. P=Pair.
I've chosen the good to mint examples to match what he claims.
Obviously condition plays a huge part in driver prices, as does the willingness to ship outside of the US, and the rep of the seller, a couple of those 288C and 515B sales are from a well known seller with a good rep.

    828 Cabs
    Well say $250-300

    Higara XOs
Lets say they are like a Mastering Lab Xo, therefore about $700-1000

I get a rough total of about US$3900-5800, based on the low and high points.

My spreadsheet covers prices back to 2002, it is scary to see how some drivers have really shot up, namely the 288G, 288C and 515B, plus the 1505B, and others remain flat.
The real money makers are the RWB units, and the 604 originals.

I knew keeping 700+ Altec price records would come in handy one day......

    Re: Hiraga A5s

Yes the price seems a bit high. But his prices always have been.He had a pair of empty 825/828 cabs listed for quite some time at $2000 that may explain it some. Also these 1505's have dual throats and 288's

    Where's Pano he would know about Hiraga's setup.Hiraga's was single throat/288 I think ?

    Re: Hiraga A5s

I've seen pairs of just the dual throats, 30172s, sell for $500.

I agree his prices are high, for eBay anyway. He has a lot of Dolby CP200 gear at the moment, the absolute Rolls Royce of cinema sound processors, even by today's standards, yet they are so complex to install and operate they are often junked. The fact that they were 10-20k new in the 80s is irrelevant.

    Re: Hiraga A5s

Hi Guys - I'm in D.C. for work and not looking at the forum much.

Funny to see these. Especially since I actually built the Hiraga A5s way back when. Much of the work was doubling and bracing the walls, tar behind the bass horn flares, new ports, etc. A lot of work, but worth it. Without all that work, it's not really the same speaker. But it does look like the guy has done a pretty good job and at least tried hard.

The horn on the real Hiraga A5 is single throat, with the Westrex version of the 288. usually a JBL tweeter added for the top end.

They do seem priced high, but take a look at what new high-end speakers cost. What would you get for the same money? Nothing nearly as good. Yeah, we could all put this together for less money (I sure did) but maybe not everyone could. Still pricey, tho.....

Nice to see one's favorite speaker still inspiring others.

Can you please post directions on how to research E-bay auction prices? I've never been able to do this after many attempts.

    Thx....

Basically I have an excel spreadsheet.

I search for Altec items that I want to either buy or watch the price of, then add them to my watched items, then once the item ends, put the item(read Altec model number), the price, condition and month/year of sale into the spreadsheet, plus I also add in the ending price at the time in Australian Dollars. You must note the end price on buy it now with best offer, not the listed price.

It is a completely manual system, I usually spend 10 mins or so once a week transferring data in from eBay. Some weeks there may be 4 or 5 entries, other weeks there can be 25, depending on what is on sale. I don't watch everything Altec, nowadays the more unusual stuff I record as you dont get many indications on price, but I will only record say a 515B or 604E pair once a month or so, as the price is fairly consistent (750-1000) and there is always at least two pairs up at once.

I have a specific set of grading terms, and usually note original or reconed, frame size for 515s/416 etc etc.
The trick is to settle on a convention for systems, I use horn/hf driver, or LF driver/horn/hf driver just to allow easy searching.
